The hike to Kjernfjelltjønna is perfect as an evening walk, followed by a refreshing swim in the mountain tarn.

After about 1 km, you can take a short detour to the giant’s kettle. This smooth, circular hole in the bedrock was formed during the last Ice Age, when meltwater carrying stones and gravel drilled deep into the rock. The giant’s kettle along this trail is approximately 5 metres in diameter.

Trail description

The hike starts at Nordland National Park Centre. Follow the signs past Roparneset and turn right just before the suspension bridge crossing the Junkerdalselva River.

Follow the well-marked trail through the pine forest. After approximately 1 km, you will see signs for the short detour to the giant’s kettle. Otherwise, simply continue along the trail all the way to Kjernfjelltjønna.

During the summer months, you can shorten the hike by starting from the parking area along the old Highway 77. Drive towards Sweden and turn left just before the Kjernfjell Tunnel. From there, it is approximately 1.1 km to Kjernfjelltjønna.
