The trail leads through the Storjord Arboretum, where you can discover around 30 different tree species from Norway and abroad. From there, it continues through old Scots pine forest, where traces of both the Ice Age and human activity can still be seen.

Along the way, you will pass a kettle hole formed during the last Ice Age and an ancient pitfall trapping system that bears witness to traditional hunting methods. At the old tar kiln, you can learn how tar was produced from pine trees before continuing to the Forest Ranger’s House and the cone drying house, where pine cones were dried and processed for seed production. Information boards along the trail provide insights into the area’s natural and cultural history.

Trail description

The hike starts at Nordland National Park Centre. Follow the signs to the Nature Trail, passing the climbing playground and through the Storjord Arboretum. After crossing the narrow suspension bridge, turn right and follow the gravel road uphill.

Continue along the marked Nature Trail through the pine forest locally known as Brannen. About halfway around the loop, a short detour leads down to the river, where you will find a sheltered lean-to with a fire pit.

Continue the loop to the Forest Ranger’s House, then follow the gravel road back towards the suspension bridge. Retrace your route through the arboretum to Nordland National Park Centre.
